Original USGS DRGs

The U.S. Geological Survey distributes the DRGs in their original form (with collar information) via Earth Explorer. For more information, see:  http://topomaps.usgs.gov/drg/

Modified USGS DRGs

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources removed the collar information from the original USGS DRGs to allow seamless viewing of adjacent files. DNR also standardized the files to UTM Zone 15 (extended across Minnesota) and to the NAD83 datum. USGS also distributes collarless DRGs.

  • DNR Data Deli: DNR distributes individual files free online at the 1:24,000-, 1:100,000- and 1:250,000-scales. See the "Scanned Maps" section of the  theme catalog to link to documentation and data for each available scale.
  • Seamless Data Distribution System: USGS distributes collarless DRGs free online.
  • Minnesota.data Volume 3: Contains all the DNR-modified DRGs in a five-CD set (Disk 4 was updated 7/01 to contain the updated Hudson DRG; the replacement Red Wing file should be downloaded from the section below).

Three replacement DRG files

  • Oronoco:  The initial USGS release of the Oronoco 1:24,000-scale DRG, located at the boundary between Wabasha and Olmsted counties, incorrectly showed all green areas as blue. USGS has corrected the file. Click here to download the replacement file, then double-click on the file (o44092b5.exe) in Windows Explorer to unzip the DRG.
  • Hudson (WI-MN):  USGS created the original DRG from the 1967 1:24,000-scale Hudson topographic map. LMIC has created a DRG from the 1993 quad map revision; it is clipped in order to match the modified USGS DRGs described above. Since the Hudson quad is in the rapidly-growing Twin Cities metropolitan area in eastern Washington County (MN) and western St. Croix County (WI), many new features appear in the 1993 version. Click here to download the file (drg3636.exe), then double-click on the .exe file in Windows Explorer to unzip the DRG.
  • Red Wing (MN-WI):  This clipped DRG file, from the Minnesota.data CD set described above, did not have the correct geographic coordinates. Click here to download a replacement file (drg3938.exe), then double-click on the .exe file in Windows Explorer to unzip the DRG.
